The GM 9.5″ 14 bolt semi floating axle is a common upgrade for people who want to retain their 6 lug wheels and move up to something more robust than the 8.5″ 10 bolt.
The semi-float 14 bolt bridges the gap between the 10 bolt and the big boy 14 bolt FF axle. It is still a c-clip axle, but with a larger 9.5″ ring gear, bigger pinion diameter, and bigger axle diameters than the 10 bolt.
This axle was installed in a wide range of trucks and SUV’s. Due to the variety of option packages that may or may not include this axle, one should ID it based on the rear cover.
Good models to check when looking for a doner would be any “heavy-half” 1500 or light duty 2500 trucks. Both should be 6 lug. It was also installed some 1500’s that were optioned with the 6.5L diesel. Some 9.5″ axles were also available in 8 lug. The most rare would be the 5 lug version installed in the 454SS pickup.
Be aware that 4WD axles are not the same width as 2WD axles. Swapping a 10 bolt for a 9.5″ axle requires a conversion u-joint and larger u-bolts. The axle tubes are a larger diameter than the 8.5″ rear.
